Sukkertoppen

ENGLISH VERSION:

Sukkertoppen (the Sugar Top) has received its name due to the light-colored sand in the subsoil. In the old days, and when the cattle and sheep had grazed the plants away, the sun could light up the sand on the top of the hill. Therefore, it reminded people of an old fashioned sugar top from a counter in a grocery shop.

The significant Sukkertoppen has presumably been present in history since the Viking Age. Horsens Museum has dated findings of tree coals in the lowering of the most southern point of Sukkertoppen. Presumably, an embankment and woodwork surrounding a view post during the reign of Harald Blåtand were located at this place.

Maybe this view post was built in order to keep an eye on a farm that belonged to Harald Blåtand’s wife named Tove? At least, this is told on a rune stone in the church, Sdr. Vissing.

Exhibition on monasteries

North of Sukkertoppen, a monastery called Voer Kloster was situated with a watermill named Klostermølle. Another monastery called Vissing Kloster, which was a convent, was situated south of Voer Kloster.

There is a fine exhibition on the monasteries in the nature center by Klostermølle. Here, you can also find inspiration for other trips in the surrounding landscape where you can enjoy nature and the many trails of activities made by our ancestors.

Sukkertoppen is a preserved area and is grazed by sheep. The purpose of this preservation is to maintain the unique view from the top.
